Was Bob Marley's Advice On Love Accurate?

Bob Marley was quoted saying “Love will never leave us alone” and in 1978 Bob Marley released his hit song asking a profound question “Is This Love?”. His song was not only a groovy reggae beat to dance to, but the question he presented in the song awakened your current awareness of the beautiful feelings associated with love and also brought to question the current relationships you were experiencing.

So how can these two statements from Mr. Marley be of any relevance to us today concerning love?

Well with how the entertainment, social media, and society paints the picture of what love looks like many of use can get confused and even disheartened, when we don’t experience love like “Cinderella”, “The Notebook” or “Love & Basketball”.

Some will internalize why they are still single or why their marriage is on the verge of divorce. Gender roles have dramatically changed to were women are proposing to men and are the ones pursuing and wooing. Long term friendships are ending in betrayal and heated battles, while families are divided and living together in silence.

Because of the confusion regarding love and what it is, both men and women subject themselves to emotional, physical and sexual abuse and manipulation, only in the pursuit of feeling loved. However ending up feeling empty and traveling down a path that results in mental illnesses, such as depression.

So why are we hurt by love if it's created purpose is to provide us with a beautiful emotion?

The answer is…. we’re not.

Love never hurts us. Love is always with us. Love is God. God will never leave you nor hurt you. However people's actions and our response to their actions do hurt us.

1 Corinthians 13:4-8 will help you gauge “Is this Love” question in all of the relationships you find yourself in and also the relationship you have with yourself ..... Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It does not dishonor others, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. (NIV)
